RESUMO

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar o histórico e as características principais da Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte (OTAN), tendo como tema condutor a segurança coletiva. Para tanto, o texto está dividido em quatro partes, além da introdução, em que apresentamos a problemática do estudo, e das considerações finais, em que abordamos as possibilidades futuras para a OTAN e a segurança coletiva. Essas partes tratam seqüencialmente do histórico, das características gerais, dos objetivos e da estrutura e funcionamento da organização. A exposição do texto tem como questão central as ações e inter-relações da OTAN com o paradigma de segurança coletiva que surgiu após a II Guerra Mundial e que vem redefinindo suas bases após o fim do sistema bipolar.

ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to present the architecture and the historical evolution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), within the framework of the collective security. In order to get this objective in the first moment it will be examined the main structural aspects and the features of this international organization. In the second time, the analysis focuses specifically on the actions and interrelations between the OTAN and the collective security paradigm which appeared after the II World War and that has been a subject of crucial changes after the end of the bipolar system. Finally, it will be shown the future possibilities of this process.
